One important way of helping a sluggish computer is to stop unnecessary programs that automatically start up when the computer boots up. This can vary from 20 up to 50 – 60 or more. Anything above 30 is too much and even then you should make sure they are really needed.

Unless you are very good with computers you should not try and stop one of these startup programs on your own. There are several ways to do it such as uninstalling and reinstalling the application. It gets to be a little complicated with situations such as printers that probably have a suite of on going programs and drivers.

slow pc solutions The easiest method is to let a registry cleaning program to do it for you. Most of these up-to-date quality programs have a startup manager that will give you the option of turning off or leaving alone these programs.

You should not run more than one Firewall because they will “fight” against each other and slow down your pc. Windows has a built in Firewall and anti-virus programs can have one also. When installing an anti-virus you should disable its firewall, at least most of the time. Some of these programs use a different set up such as a “residence shield” that will work in conjunction with the computer’s firewall.

Other things that can be done to help with speed issues are: increase the amount of RAM or random access memory which is the short term data storage (see the above post: Increase Computer Speed With Additional RAM); increase the virtual memory that works in conjunction with the RAM; and maybe stop the file indexing. Some of these are pretty involved.

Be sure to do you homework before attacking these possible problem areas of your computer. It seems like people fall into two categories when it comes to working on computers: They won’t do anything because they are afraid they will mess something up – or – they will do way too much and really mess things up….
