But what is the “registry” anyway? It is simply where all of the configuration data to run each application and all the hardware functions is stored. Everything from font size, color schemes, defaults, auto updates, etc. So when you, say, double click on a picture the processor goes to the registry to see which program should open it… MS Pic Mgr, Pic Viewer, MS Photo Gallery? And if it takes too long to find this default selection then you see the computer hesitate. Soon that hesitation gets longer and so on and…..
The cause for the slow down is probably a lot of small pieces of data left from different past functions.. delete, uninstall, unexpected PC shutdown, etc. This trash may include outdated registry entries, invalid file paths and extensions, different types of errors, etc.

Increase Computer Speed with Additional RAM
Our grandparents studied the 3 R’s…. Reading, Riting, and Rithmatic. OK, I’m sure it was even corny back then… But today, at least in computer maintenance, it is the 2 R’s. Registry and RAM. What is RAM and how can it increase computer speed?
First, see where your computer stacks up right now. Go to your control panel and find System or System Information. There you will see some general information on your computer such as Model, Processor, etc. The RAM will be listed as Memory or maybe SDRAM. From XP forward computers need at least 1 gigabyte but really 2 gb is much better even in older models. You can’t have too much and it is not expensive.
If you have enough RAM, examine the “registry” further. To learn more about what it does, why it may need a good cleaning, and some simple repair ideas you can do yourself go to “PC Cleaner” and then click on the FAQ link at the top. You’ll find a good explanation there that may help.

But what is it? Random Access Memory is your computer’s working memory. It is a non-moving stick or small circuit board that is attached to the Mother Board of the PC by being plugged in. This is in contrast to the main drive storage disc that is just that, a “disc” similar to a DVD that moves when being accessed.
There is almost always room or slots for additional RAM to plug-in to the mother board and add to its capacity. On a desktop this is pretty easy by opening the side of the case. A laptop is a little more difficult and you should be careful about breaking warranty seals on new notebooks.
To add more RAM I would suggest taking in your present stick or circuit board to a local PC shop. There are different types and speeds and you need to match it exactly. The pictures here are pretty accurate as to the RAM and the mother board with the slots where the RAM is plugged in. You can remove it by taking off the case side panel and pulling it with your fingers. Don’t use pliers or anything that will crimp or scratch it. (and of course have the PC off and unplugged!)

Simple Method to Check RAM Performance
As talked about in the earlier post there is simple way to see what your RAM performance is doing and if it is the reason your computer hesitates or is generally sluggish. It want take 5 minutes.
On your desktop right click on the lower tool bar or tray. It will bring up a box and you need to click on Task Manager. The Windows Task Manager shows what is going on with your PC in real time. It will change in as you open applications or other actions. Try it.
There’s a lot of info here but the Applications and Processes tabs are all I ever use. I will use the Applications tab to “End Task” sometimes when something locks up (usually my stupid printer… don’t even get me started..). You want hurt anything by telling it to end an application.
The Processes can be interesting depending on how much you know about computers and software. I’ll see things in there when working on a computer and want to know: why it is there, is it set to come on at startup automatically, etc. I would not end a process without know a lot about it. It is better to stop processes another way such as not letting it come on at startup.
On the bottom of the Task Mger box is Processes: CPU Usage: and Physical Memory. The Central Processing Unit Usage is the amount of computer capacity that is being used. It should not run up to 100% for any length of time and should fall back at idle to below 10%. If not, there is something going on that shouldn’t be.. and it’s slowing down the computer.
The Physical Memory is your RAM. When you start your computer it will usually take up 25 to 60 percent of that memory. As you open other applications it will rise and fall. It should not remain above 65 to 70% or the processor will not have any wiggle room from which to operate and, again, your PC is slowed down.
Test this out. Open up some pictures. Play some music. Open several tabs in your browser. Then try to print something or save a .pdf file all at the same time.
If you have enough RAM as discussed earlier and your CPU and Physical Memory are overloaded (as this test should have showed), your computer either: 1. Has a lot of errors and corruption in the Windows Registry; 2. Has viruses and mal-ware eating up your capacity; or 3. A combination of both. I’d bet on #3 unless you have a really good virus system and most of them are not good.

Slow PC Solutions: More Ideas
One important way of helping a sluggish computer is to stop unnecessary programs that automatically start up when the computer boots up. This can vary from 20 up to 50 – 60 or more. Anything above 30 is too much and even then you should make sure they are really needed.
Unless you are very good with computers you should not try and stop one of these startup programs on your own. There are several ways to do it such as uninstalling and reinstalling the application. It gets to be a little complicated with situations such as printers that probably have a suite of on going programs and drivers.
The easiest method is to let a registry cleaning program to do it for you. Most of these up-to-date quality programs have a startup manager that will give you the option of turning off or leaving alone these programs.
You should not run more than one Firewall because they will “fight” against each other and slow down your pc. Windows has a built in Firewall and anti-virus programs can have one also. When installing an anti-virus you should disable its firewall, at least most of the time. Some of these programs use a different set up such as a “residence shield” that will work in conjunction with the computer’s firewall.
Other things that can be done to help with speed issues are: increase the amount of RAM or random access memory which is the short term data storage (see the above post: Increase Computer Speed With Additional RAM); increase the virtual memory that works in conjunction with the RAM; and maybe stop the file indexing. Some of these are pretty involved.
Be sure to do you homework before attacking these possible problem areas of your computer. It seems like people fall into two categories when it comes to working on computers: They won’t do anything because they are afraid they will mess something up – or – they will do way too much and really mess things up….
